A mortise lock is a lock mechanism that fits into a deep rectangular pocket (the 'mortise') cut into the edge of a door, rather than sitting on the surface like a standard knob-and-deadbolt setup. The lock body itself houses the latch, deadbolt, and sometimes a privacy or passage function all in one integrated unit. Because the mechanism is recessed into the door, it offers significantly more resistance to kick-in and lateral force — a big reason why builders used them so extensively in New Jersey residential construction from the 1920s through the 1970s. Inside the lock body, you'll find a mortise lock cylinder (the keyed plug), a cam that drives the bolt, a spindle that connects the lever or knob to the latch, and a series of internal springs and cams.
